What are Fordyce Spots?

Fordyce Spots (otherwise known as Fordyce's Spots or Sebaceous Prominence) are small raised white or red spots or bumps that appear on the scrotum, penis shaft, labia, as well as on the lips and face. They are common is men and women of all ages. While the direct cause is unknown, there appears to be a genetic factor. It usually appears during puberty.

Fordyce Spots are a natural occurrence of the human body. They are not harmful in any way. They are not contagious or cancerous and are not a sexually transmitted infection.

Difference between Tyson's Glands and Pearly Penile Papules

Fordyce spots can also appear around the glans penis (or around the head of the penis). When this happens they are called Tyson's Glands. In the picture below the Tyson's Glands can be seen clearly on both sides of the frenulum.

Pearly penile papules are small skin tags or domed-shaped white bumps that appear around the head of the penis and sometimes on either side of the frenulum. The white dots on the glans penis in the below picture represent the pearly penile papules.

Fordyce Spots and Tyson's Glands are considered to be manifestations of the same condition. Pearly penile papules, however, are considered a different condition. Please see for good information about pearly penile papules.

Treatment for Fordyce Spots

There appears to be no topical treatment available for Fordyce Spots. Regular TCA peels and daily exfoliation can help reduce the appearance. If stopped the Fordyce spots will return to normal.

Laser treatment  (CO2, hyfrecator, Pulse Dye laser) has been used with success in some people to help minimise the appearance on a more long term level. There is a concern that some of the stronger lasers such as CO2 laser can leave some scaring.

Other treatments that seem promising include a procedure similar to that of milia extraction and micropunch treatment. For more information about micropunch treatment please click here.

Topical Treatment for Fordyce Spots

Topical treatments may minimise the appearance of Fordyce Spots, however, there is no known topical treatment that can cure Fordyce Spots.

If you want to minimise the appearance, exfoliating creams and scrubs may be of assistance. These help to remove build up skin and dirt that may contribute to clogged pores and build up of sebum.

Skin peels such as TCA peels are also recommended, however, care must be taken when using acids as penile skin (particularly around the glans penis) can be quite sensitive.

Is Fordyce Spots Acne?

Fordyce Spots are not acne. Many guys try to treat Fordyce Spots as they would acne, but unfortunately it does not work.

The only relationship appears to be slight visual resemblance.
